With nearly 30 years of post-qualification experience, Duncan is an established Solicitor specialising in all aspects of competition, subsidy control, public procurement, data protection and regulatory law.

Duncan spent 10 years as a Partner with DLA Piper in the City of London and has extensive experience advising companies under investigation by UK, EU and other competition authorities for alleged participation in cartels or abuse of dominance.

For the last 10 years, Duncan has been an independent consultant Solicitor working directly with clients and as a consultant to major City and international law firms.

A primary focus of Duncan’s work has been State aid and subsidy control law, where he advises public sector bodies wishing to award subsidies, subsidy recipients, private companies under investigation for allegedly receiving unlawful aid and companies complaining about unlawful state aid to their competitors. Duncan has been responsible for a number of notifications to the Subsidy Advice Unit of the Competition and Markets Authority and has brought a number of State aid cases before the European Courts.

Duncan has an honours degree in Mining and Petroleum Engineering and before retraining as a lawyer spent 10 years working with the IT department of HSBC Bank plc. He therefore has a particular interest in the application of the law to the energy and technology sectors and has significant experience advising clients in those sectors.
