Academic researchers at the University of Sydney’s clinical trial center have expanded their collaboration with drug study technology supplier Medidata.

The agreement, which builds on an earlier cancer-focused collaboration, will use Medidata’s technology in more clinical studies.

In a press statement, Meg Jardine, professor and director, NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre, said, “We have been utilizing Medidata for the past six years, in particular for studies that may feasibly contribute to regulatory submissions and are impressed with Medidata’s proactive approach to compliance with global data privacy and security regulations.

“As a thriving academic Clinical Trials Centre, we are leaders in the development of adaptive and platform trials. We have built strong two-way relationships with Medidata to support our expert clinical data systems team in delivering stream-lined functionality in these complex and evolving trial settings."

Edwin Ng, senior vice president and general manager of Medidata’s Asia-Pacific operations, was similarly enthusiastic about the partnership.

“The CTC’s contribution to advancing clinical research and care has led to better patient outcomes. By expanding our work together, we are not only fortifying the value of Medidata’s unified platform but also empowering the CTC to accelerate their research.”

According to the Clinical Trials Centre, Medidata’s technologies have allowed it to streamline drug research activities by consolidating multiple data systems into a single platform. The system has also allowed the center to conduct up to 30 studies in parallel.

The expanded deal comes just a few weeks after Australia’s Medical Research Future Fund National Critical Research Infrastructure Initiative awarded the Clinical Trials Centre a grant to support efforts in ramping up drug research in the country.

The grant was provided to further the development of so-called “adaptive” and “platforms” that have the potential to accelerate the development of effective therapies and improve patient outcomes.
