A joint project led by Van Iperen International and LandLab, along with other partners, has won the EU LIFE Award 2023 in the category of Environment.

The award went to the joint project, Plants for Plants®, at a ceremony during the EU Green Week in Brussels at the European Commission on 6 June 2023.

The project involves harvesting plant extracts from organically grown food crops and turning these into a new generation of biostimulant products that can be applied to other crops.

Van Iperen International and LandLab thanked the EU LIFE Award 2023 committee for recognizing the significant contributions of Plants for Plants to sustainable agriculture and environmental preservation. “In addition, we extend our heartfelt thanks to the other beneficiaries of the LIFE project, namely Padova University, Euroliquids, and James Hutton Institute, for their valuable collaboration and support,” the statement said.

Van Iperen International expressed its appreciation to the more than 80 growers all over Europe who were involved in the demonstration trials and actively participated in the Plants for Plants project.

Plants for Plants is a new generation of plant-based biostimulants. New AG International ran an interview in the March 2020 issue of New AG International, entitled “Mining metabolites: developing a new generation.” New AG International’s Luke Hutson spoke to Adriano Altissimo of Landlab and Marc van Oers of Van Iperen International.

Altissimo explained the origins of the project: ““We started digging into the plant kingdom to find their actives, and then to find out which ones could be then useful when applied to other crops,” he said. “These actives are plant compounds, such as heterosides, polyphenols, organic acid and flavonoids. We don’t simply say we get what we get, we do our best to enhance the mother crop. These are our mines, where we mine our metabolites. We cultivate them in a very clean environment, that’s why we are growing organically.”
