Animal agriculture is one of the most resource-intensive industries on the planet, using almost 40% of habitable land, 30% of global freshwater consumption, and 40% of methane emissions. With over 8 billion people in the world improving food security and sustainability has never been more imperative.

Cultured meat uses animal derived cells to produce meat and aims to drastically reduce the environmental impact of meat while increasing the capacity of global meat production. Many cultured meat companies are focused on producing traditional meats in a more sustainable and scalable way. Vow is different. At Vow we are leveraging biodiversity to create foods with totally new flavours, aromas, shapes and textures.

Taking a multi-species approach to cultured meat, one challenge that we have faced is isolating specific cell types from a biopsy. Typically, specific cells are selected by cell surface labeling and fluorescent sorting (FACS), but this approach requires unique markers and antibodies for every species. To overcome this challenge we have developed an automated liquid handling, imaging and analysis platform that enables the selection of our desired cell types from a variety of species. As such we are able to quickly and repeatedly generate new cell banks from any species we are interested in.
