What Destination Marketers Should Expect from AI Beyond the Hype

Over the next few years, AI will stop being a feature destination marketers shop for and start being the foundation their work runs on. The organizations that win won't be the ones with the most AI tools. They'll be the ones whose AI is grounded in their own data, connected to how they actually plan and buy, and able to explain itself.

As destination marketers head to eTourism Marketplace this November, the hype is everywhere. Here's what we think DMOs should realistically expect from AI next, and how to tell the difference between a promise and a platform.

The shift ahead: from AI tools to AI infrastructure

The first wave of AI in tourism was about novelty: a chatbot on the website, a faster way to draft social copy, a dashboard with a "generate insights" button. Useful, but bolted on.

The next wave is different. AI is becoming the layer that connects research, planning, campaigns and results. Instead of asking "what can this AI tool do?", destination leaders are starting to ask, "what does AI need to know about our destination to actually help?"

We hear that shift in our own conversations with DMO teams. The first question used to be "what is this?" Now it moves quickly to "how would this work for us?" That's the question the whole industry is about to start asking.

Expect AI you can trace back to its data

The question destination leaders ask us most isn't about features. It's: where does the data come from?

Expect that question to become the standard test for every AI investment. DMOs answer to boards, tourism development councils and taxpayers. A recommendation that can't be traced to a source is a recommendation that can't be defended.

In practice, that means the intelligence has to run on one connected dataset, with market signals, media plans and results in the same place, so an insight can be followed back to where it came from. It's the principle we built our own platform around: one platform, one dataset, one AI. As AI gets more powerful, that kind of transparency will matter more, not less.

Expect fewer tools, not more

The second question we hear constantly: How would this fit alongside the tools we already use?

Most DMO teams already juggle a media planner, a CRM, a project tracker, an asset library, a reporting dashboard and a research subscription or two. Each one holds a slice of the picture. Layering a separate AI tool on top only adds another slice.

The future belongs to consolidation. AI does its best work when it can see everything at once, and it can't see much when planning, relationships, projects, assets, reporting and research each live in a different system.

Expect the conversation to shift from "which AI tool should we add?" to "which tools can we finally retire?"

Expect AI to plan what's next, not just report what happened

Today, a lot of destination reporting looks backward: last quarter's visitation, last campaign's impressions, last year's hotel occupancy. Teams spend weeks building decks that explain what already happened.

The real promise of AI is a closed loop. Market signals shape the media plan, the plan drives the campaign, and results flow straight back into the next round of planning, all on the same data.

When that loop runs continuously, the job changes. Less time explaining the past. More time deciding where to invest next and adjusting before a campaign ends instead of after.

Expect more from your agency partner

AI is raising the bar for what DMOs should expect from the agencies they hire. Great creative will always matter. But destinations will increasingly need partners who pair that creative with real intelligence and can show the data behind every recommendation.

We've seen this firsthand. When we bring the data behind a recommendation into the room alongside the creative, the conversation changes, and the teams we work with tell us that's exactly the kind of partner they're looking for. Expect more agencies to be asked the same question: what technology sits behind your strategy?

Beyond the hype: questions to ask any AI vendor

You'll hear a lot of AI promises this November. These questions cut through them:

  • What data powers this, and how current is it?
  • Can I see how a recommendation was reached?
  • Does this consolidate our tools and workload, or add to them?
  • Once the AI tells me something, how does it connect to how we plan, buy and report?
  • What happens to the data and tools we already have?

The AI worth investing in has clear answers to every one.
