We all know what they are experts on, but we want to know what makes our speakers tick. In this series, we sit down with some of our key speakers for 60 seconds to find out a bit more about them before they take to the stage at FundForum International in Berlin, 6-8 June 2016.

60 Seconds with...

Paul Craven, Founder, Paul Craven Partners

1. What is your personal philosophy?

Asked "Who is the rich man?" Epictetus replied, “He who is content.” There is so much ancient wisdom in classical philosophy, particularly relevant to our 21st century lives, and I’d recommend a healthy blend of Stoicism, Epicureanism and Skepticism. I would also aspire to magician David Devant's “All done by kindness.” And as a proponent of behavioural economics, I’m also very fond of a phrase that I heard recently: “We must not do the wrong thing for the right reason.”

2. If you could do another job for just one day, what would it be?

Having worked in the investment industry for nearly 30 years, I’d love to be a top stage magician in a big Las Vegas show for a day! Magic has always been a passionate hobby of mine, and as a member of the exclusive ‘Magic Circle,’ I have been fortunate enough to have performed for some amazing people and indeed become friends with some of the greatest magicians in the world. It would be very exciting to perform alongside them to a packed house.

3. Disruption is always on the tip of everyone’s tongue. In your opinion, what is going to be the ultimate game-changer for the finance industry?

Technology. And I think it will be a largely beneficial and creative disruption that we need not fear.

4. What's your favourite thing about Berlin?

The momentous historic events leading up to November 9th 1989 when the Wall came down,  symbolising the triumph of bottom-up democratic forces against top-down imposed authoritarianism. Also, in a somewhat different vein, the fact that the city provided the inspirational backdrop for David Bowie’s ‘Berlin Trilogy’ of great albums: Low, Heroes and Lodger.

5. What are you most looking forward to at Fund Forum 2016?

Communication! As Gregory Bateson said "The meaning of your communication is the response you get,” so not just is it a privilege to be a FundForum International speaker on the topic of Behavioural Economics, but also I look forward to plenty of intellectual interaction with some of the smartest people in the business.

Paul Craven will be speaking in the FutureFinance Forum at FundForum International, taking place in Berlin, 6-8 June 2016.
