Santiago LaverdeCounsel, International - Ethics & Compliance, Anti-Corruption, Competition and Trade Compliance at Woodside EnergySpeaker
Profile
Santiago works for Woodside Energy (former BHP Petroleum) as International Counsel, covering the areas of Anti-Corruption, Competition and Trade Compliance. An attorney trained in civil law jurisdictions in Colombia and a New York licensed attorney, Santiago has been in the legal profession for more than 20 years. During this span, he has worked for oil field services and EPC contractors in the Houston area since 2007. Santiago’s compliance career started in 2009 when he joined Halliburton’s Ethics & Compliance team at a time when the company was tasked with implementing its commitments with the SEC as a result of Halliburton’s FCPA settlement stemming from the operations their former affiliate (KBR) had in Nigeria. After his tenure at Halliburton, Santiago worked for another oilfield services company (Baker Hughes) and an a now defunct EPC company (CB&I) in commercial and compliance related roles. Currently Santiago’s remit in Woodside has expanded from traditional Ethics & Compliance areas (ABC, International Trade, etc.) to now include Competition law advice covering traditional Oil & Gas operations and interactions with venture partners and competitors, M&A transactions, and the greatly creative and evolving New Energies market, where Woodside is exploring projects in Hydrogen, Carbon Offsets, and Carbon Capture Usage and Storage (CCUS), in buying, selling and developing roles.
