Ben Young is the President & CEO of Southwest Properties Limited. As one of Atlantic Canada’s leading real estate developers, Southwest owns, operates, and develops residential and commercial real estate in Atlantic Canada and extended stay accommodations across Canada.
Prior to his promotion, Ben was Southwest’s Vice President of Construction & Development where he led the construction team on several award-winning developments, including MAPLE on Hollis Street and oversaw PAVILION condominiums and CURVE rentals on South Park Street. Under Southwest’s partnership with New Castle Hotels, Ben participated in the restoration of the Algonquin Resort and oversaw the redesign of its world-renowned golf course. He also managed the new builds of the Residence Inn and Courtyard Marriott in Dartmouth.
Southwest has several major multi-unit and mixed-use projects in the planning and construction phase, including Cunard on the Halifax waterfront and the community of Seton Ridge. Cunard will bring 231 rental suites to downtown, and Seton will offer exciting retail and 2,400 housing units, including 163 single-family dwellings. The team is also in the planning stage of two new redevelopment projects in south end Halifax on Lucknow Street, and the other between South and Harvey streets.
Aside from his responsibilities in the office, Ben served as Board Chair for the Better Business Bureau and for the Urban Development Institute of Nova Scotia (UDI). He is currently a member of TEC Canada, a member-based leadership development organization of chief executives, entrepreneurs, and business owners.
A sports enthusiast, he holds a fourth-degree black belt in Karate and is a four-time Ironman competitor.
Ben’s career and passion for real estate development was fueled prior to Southwest during his time as Chief Executive Officer for Ramar Homes and his term with Armco Capital.
