Insurance FAQs for exhibitors
What is Public and Products Liability Insurance?
Public liability insurance covers the cost of claims/demands made by members of the public for incidents that occur in connection with Informa’s business activities. The insurance policy covers compensation for injuries, damage to property and defence costs.
Examples would be someone tripping over a chair or cable and breaking a limb, an object falling on their head or burning themselves with hot coffee. On the other of end of the spectrum would be setting the venue on fire (unintentionally), someone passing away due to a severe allergic reaction due to food being served at the event or severe injury caused by a stand collapsing in the build-up stage.
Why is Informa asking exhibitors to have Public Liability cover in place?
Informa is asking Exhibitors to have Public Liability cover in place to ensure they would be able to meet their financial obligations if someone was injured, or property damaged during the event (including move-in through move-out) and the incident happened due to the exhibitor’s negligence. Additionally, it is often a requirement of the venue and Informa is not at liberty to decide otherwise.
Who needs Public Liability Insurance
Every business and individual may be sued for damage or injury they cause to others. They could pay compensation out of their own finances and retain their own lawyers or could buy insurance to take care of this. Every business which cannot afford to potentially pay millions of dollars in compensation, should arrange for suitable insurance.
Could exhibitors be covered under Informa’s Public Liability insurance
No. The company at fault (or their insurer) needs to pay in case of someone being injured, or their property damaged.
How are limits decided?
The limit of insurance which is required is mainly decided on the requirements of the venue and the country in which the Event takes place. What limits of insurance would be customary and available in this country.
How is Public Liability different from Property Insurance?
Public Liability cover compensates a third party for their property being damaged and Property Insurance compensates the company which bought the insurance for the loss of their own property.
If an exhibitor has property insurance and their equipment burnt down due to fire caused by another exhibitor,
they will have the option to either sue the exhibitor who caused the fire or claim under their property insurance and let their property insurer recover the amounts from the exhibitor at fault.
