Student B.S. Marine Transportation and USCG Third Mate Unlimited Tonnage License at Great Lakes Maritime Academy

Leith Canaby Elzie is a sophomore deck cadet at Great Lakes Maritime Academy (GLMA) in Traverse City, MI. He's pursuing a degree in Marine Transportation and a USCG Third Mate's Unlimited Tonnage License. He's the President of the deck program's Volunteer Tutoring Society. Last summer he was one of the few cadets selected to participate in GLMA's inaugural tug program. Because of the program, he was able to earn his tug endorsement, and is projected to sail on a tanker this fall to gain his tankerperson PIC. Leith will graduate in May 2028 and plans to sail on his USCG Third Mate's license and pursue a career as a harbor pilot.
