Profile

Richard May works on competition policy topics for the OECD Competition Committee and its Working Parties authoring and contributing to research on cross-cutting competition policy issues on a range of topics. He has been leading the division’s work on AI and competition. He also leads the Division’s work on market studies, including working on in-country market study and competition assessment projects supporting governments to improve competition. Prior to joining the OECD, Mr May worked for the New Zealand Commerce Commission, where he was the Principal Advisor for Market Studies. During his time at the Commission, he also led teams in the investigation of mergers, as well as leading work on ex post reviews and the Commission’s competition strategy. Mr May began his career in a boutique economics consultancy in London before joining the Office of Fair Trading/Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) where he worked predominantly as an economist, gaining significant experience in particular in merger control. His last role at the CMA was leading the economic research and evaluation team. Before leaving for New Zealand, he joined the UK's Financial Conduct Authority as a Technical Specialist in Competition Economics in the competition team, where he led teams of economists working on market studies. Richard holds a BSc in Economics and Econometrics from the University of Bristol and an MSc in Economics from the University of London (Birkbeck College).
