Helen had several other jobs, such as nurse, construction administrator and full-time mother, before retraining with the Open University in Natural Sciences. This led her onto doing a PhD at Reading University where she researched the potential for using in-situ technologies for investigating radioactive contaminated land, after which she joined NUVIA, and established the Land Remediation and Characterisation department.
