Essentials of Rail Signalling

Learn railway signaling systems, track circuits, interlocking, and safety protocols

Essentials of Rail Signalling Training Course

About the Course

This course will provide you with a foundational knowledge and understanding of railway signalling. This training is to demystify signalling, which is often considered a “dark art” within the railway community. The teaching methods of this course, which have proven successful for complete railway novices and experienced non-signalling railway professionals alike, will make sure that you are able to understand everything taught here(unlike in many traditional signalling trainings that require too much prior knowledge).

Who Should Attend

This course is specifically targeted at signalling beginners, either people who want to join the railway altogether or railway professionals with little to no prior signalling knowledge who want to gain understanding and confidence about this critical discipline.

Past participants have included project managers, senior and principal engineers (mainly from non-signalling disciplines), consultants, train drivers, safety and procurement specialists, engineering managers, and executive leaders in rail planning, operations, and business development.

Key Learning Objectives

  • Essential concepts and terms of conventional signalling
  • Architecture elements of contemporary signalling systems
  • Typical railway hazards and ways to mitigate them
  • Types of railway vehicles and their connection to signalling
  • Elements and layouts of railway tracks
  • Key components of signalling systems and their function
  • Essentials of interlockings and train protection systems
  • Examples of signalling principles with optional further reading
