Ruud van der Velden is a partner at Hogan Lovells in Amsterdam. He has 20 years’ experience in multi-jurisdictional patent litigation, with a particular focus on life sciences. He litigates before all Courts in the Netherlands and the Unified Patent Court.

Ruud has a very good track record in complicated cases. He obtained a cross-border patent infringement injunction shortly after a CJEU decision was rendered that was deemed to have made this impossible. He obtained a landmark Dutch Supreme Court decision on direct and indirect patent infringement in a case relating to a patent for a combination therapy. He also successfully enforced a second medical use patent that was revoked in almost every other jurisdiction. Recently, he successfully invoked BMS’ patent for apixaban, notwithstanding the UK part of the patent having been revoked.

Ruud is the recipient of the Managing IP Award for Patent Practitioner of the Year in the Netherlands (2024). He previously received the Gouden Zandloper award, two Client Choice Awards and the Dutch AIPPI Award for his publication on obtaining evidence of patent infringement. Ruud is recommended by all legal directories, including Chambers, Legal 500, JUVE, IP Stars and IAM Patent 1000.
