Rod Werhan was a career National Bank Examiner with the OCC beginning in June 1983 and retiring in February 2020. He began his career examining agricultural banks in Kansas and Nebraska during the ag crisis of the 1980s and learned early on the importance of strong credit risk management systems. Throughout his career, he concentrated on assessing commercial credit risk management practices in community, midsize, and large banks. He is most proud of working with bank management to enhance systems to identify, measure, monitor, and control risk before significant problems developed. While much of Rod’s credit experience involved evaluating commercial and CRE lending practices, he also developed expertise reviewing credit risk in the retail area. His retail examining experience included reviewing credit cards, direct and indirect lending, home equity lending, and mortgage banking. Rod was on a team that developed the OCC”s retail credit school and subsequently was an instructor for several years. He was also a mentor to several new examiners and led several OCC training teams.
