Mr. Steffelin has over 25 years of investment experience in structured products, alternative assets, and real estate. He currently serves as Managing Director of George Smith Partners, advising real estate sponsors on debt and equity capital, and is a cofounder of two start-up real estate companies, STAC Capital and Balcara Group. STAC Capital finances model homes, and Balcara Group creates single-family rental communities.
From 2009 to 2017, he was EVP of Capital Markets at Walton International Group, overseeing a New York-based analyst team and building institutional relationships. He created a distressed vacant developed lot fund, structured a land investment vehicle with a family office, and co-founded RAM Real Estate Capital.
In 2008–2009, he was Managing Director at ICP Capital, winding down structured finance vehicles and purchasing distressed mortgage securities. Prior to that, he was Senior Managing Director at GSC Group, where he managed Eliot Bridge, a long-short credit fund, and the distressed mortgage fund Pendulum. He also served as CEO of GSC Capital Corporation.
Earlier in his career, he held roles at TCW Group, Allianz Risk Transfer AG, XL Financial Solutions, CGA Investment Management (where he structured Canada’s first two CMBS transactions), CapMAC, and the New York Stock Exchange.
He holds an M.B.A. from Dartmouth College and graduated Phi Beta Kappa with Honors in Economics from Occidental College.
