Dr Gowri Nanayakkara is a dual qualified lawyer (Sri Lanka and England and Wales) who started off as an Attorney at Law and later joined the Attorney General’s Department of Sri Lanka as a State Counsel. After her post graduate studies in Intellectual Property Law at Queen Mary University and the University of Kent, she worked as a Senior Lecturer at several UK universities. She then joined the Government Legal Department (GLD), initially as a litigation lawyer in the Ministry of Justice and later moved to the Department for Business and Trade Legal Advisers, joining the Intellectual Property team, where she is currently working as a trade lawyer specialising in copyright law. Gowri was appointed as the copyright lead on the IP Law Expert Panel that advised the Government of Sri Lanka. She has published widely on IP related matters including a monograph, ‘Performers’ Rights in Sri Lanka: Singers’ Melancholia’ [Palgrave MacMillan, 2019]. She has presented her work at many national and international, and academic and law conferences, including SLSA (Socio-legal Studies Association), LSA (Law and Society Association) and LAWASIA conference.
