Jan Rybnicek is a partner in the Antitrust group at Freshfields, based in Washington, D.C. He advises clients across a broad range of industries - including life sciences, technology, financial services, higher education, and industrials - on complex antitrust matters. His practice spans high-stakes merger and conduct investigations before the Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission, as well as high-profile civil antitrust litigation in federal court.


With nearly two decades of experience, Jan is known for delivering practical, commercially focused legal advice. Clients value his ability to distill complex antitrust economics into clear, actionable strategies that align with their business goals. His insights are informed by prior government service, including his role as principal attorney advisor to an FTC Commissioner, where he shaped enforcement decisions, legislative initiatives, and policy development.


Jan began his legal career clerking for the Honorable Mark S. Davis in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. He has served as an editor of the Antitrust Law Journal and as an adjunct professor at the Antonin Scalia Law School at George Mason University.
