Beniamino Saibene from Esterni spoke to us at the FEI EMEA Future Trends Summit about the importance of public spaces as a means to maintain a peaceful and connected community. It was interesting to hear his perspective, with a number of the previous talks at the conference being about the need to build community in a digital world.

He suggested that since the economic boom since the 1960's-70's, community activities held in public spaces, such as washing clothes, chatting, entertainment and playing games, have been pulled back into the home as technology innovations such as television, telephones and washing machines have become affordable and allowed us to retreat to our private spaces, to the detriment of community engagement.

A suggestion Beniamino presented was that each commercial service should have a public service next to it, whereas another slightly more tongue-in-cheek proposal was that we really just need is (-) internet and (+) Cabernet.
