Since the beginning of his professional career in 1985, Mariano has been actively involved in the field of fertilizers. Since 1999, he has been co-owner and Vice-president of SILC Fertilizzanti, offering services and information on Italian and EU fertilizer legislation, among other services. During the last 25 years as a free-lance journalist, Mariano contributed to several agricultural publications with hundreds of articles on fertilizer trading, logistics, marketing and regulation. He is author of the Guide for EC Regulation 2003/2003 and a Manual on the Italian law (Decree 75/2010) concerning fertilizers. Other published books include: Fertilisers, Soil and Plant (Edagricole Ed. - Sole24Ore Group ISBN 88-506-5141-4); Guide on the Reach regulation for the International Fertiliser Society (ISBN 978-0-85310-326-4); The Sustainable Fertilisation (co-author, New Business Media - ISBN 978-88-506-5445-1).

In 2012-13 he has been a member of the working group on fertilisers (subgroup 2) being closely involved in preparing “The New Approach” later transposed in EU Regulation 2019/1009.

Over the last 20 years, Mariano has organised courses for companies involved in the fertiliser sector (labelling, traceability, health and safety procedures, regulatory aspects, etc.) and has participated as a speaker in several national and international events related to the fertiliser sector.
