Pushing the Envelope: The Future Fuel Issue #5

With the IMO's 2020 sulphur cap regulation taking effect in less than 18 months, this month's Pushing the Envelope looks at shipping's compliance options.

Scrubbers are becoming more and more popular, and Angelicoussis, Greece's largest shipowner, is only one of the many companies that chose exhaust gas cleaning systems.

LNG is also gaining in popularity as the solution to 2020 compliance. Although there are infrastructural obstacles, ExxonMobil's Luca Volta is optimistic of LNG's future in the marine fuel mix.

Meanwhile, China's drive to cut emissions from shipping a full year ahead of IMO's 2020 deadline is likely to impact the nearby market significantly, especially Singapore's marine diesel demand.

Finally, innovators in this field are also weighing in with their own solutions. Tech startup Arq is turning coal waste into low-sulphur oil, and the implications for this is huge.
