Ian Teare is the Head of the Shipping Team at Hill Dickinson’s London office. He started his career in the maritime sector with a B.Sc. (Hons) in Nautical Studies from the University of Plymouth where he specialised in Naval Architecture. After commencing his legal career in early 1992 as a Marine Manager and Casualty Investigator at one of the leading Admiralty Law Firms, Ian qualified as a solicitor in 2000.
Ian routinely advises ship owners/operators, P&I Clubs and H&M Insurers in relation to their respective interests in marine claims. He specialises in the investigation of all types of marine claims, advising on the initial casualty response and all aspects of the resolution of the subsequent claims. His particular focus is on collision and salvage claims, although also advises on a wider spectrum of cases which arise from technical issues such as machinery failures, fire, cargo damage and so on.
In the salvage arena, Ian was involved in the arbitration proceedings in the “Ocean Blessing” which, alongside parallel proceedings in the “Nagasaki Spirit” were the Article 14 cases which formed part of the genesis of the SCOPIC regime. Other significant salvage cases he has been involved in include the “Keymar”, the “Archimidis”, “Eemslift Hendrika” and “Maersk Frankfurt”. Other career highlights include advising the Owners and Insurers of the container ship, “Rena”, following her grounding (and becoming a CTL) off New Zealand in 2011 and, more recently, acting for the Owners and Insurers of the VLOC, “FMG Sydney” in the reported case “FMG Sydney v MSC Apollo [2023] EWHC 328 (Admlty)”.
During the course of his legal career to date, in addition to many years in the London market, Ian has spent five years in Athens and nine years in Singapore.
