Profile
Gavin is managing partner of the firm's Cape Town office and a member of the firm’s Executive Committee (since 2014).
Since 1992 Gavin has dealt with major maritime litigation resulting from disasters and casualties, including all aspects of casualty investigation, access, evidence on commission, related trial and arbitration work, courts of marine enquiry, and salvage work. He has also dealt extensively with arrest work, including enforcement proceedings, security, and complex associated ship arrests. He handles all port related work, especially casualty and insurance matters, also P&I Club matters including Owners' and Charterers' instructions. He also deals with mortgage foreclosures and judicial ship sales. He handles claims related to marine and transport insurance, and has been involved in major loss of life claims.
Gavin has been involved in significant precedent setting judgments for over 30 years. He was president of the SA Maritime Law Association from 2018 to 2020 and chaired the MLASA's Cape Chapter from 2007 to 2017. He chairs the MLASA's Government Liaison and Comite Maritime International (CMI) committees. An external examiner for the University of Cape Town's Admiralty Law Department, his expertise has been recognised by international legal directories including Chambers Global, Legal 500, Who's Who Legal and Best Lawyers.
