Take part in our onsite activity and join us in giving back to the community
We would like to take a moment to highlight our sustainability initiative and partnership with a local orgnanization, Mighty Writers.
Mighty Writers' mission is to teach kids of all ages to think clearly and write with clarity so they achieve success in school and life. In our free high-quality interdisciplinary after-school programs, we teach underserved students, many of them from migrant families, to discover the power of their voices. By improving their English literacy proficiency, we aim to afford them equal opportunity to achieve in school, engage with their community, and have access to the tools they need to reach their full potential.
Mighty Writers teaches nearly 5,000 kids and feeds 75,000 families each year at our 11 Mighty centers, with the help of 65 staff members and hundreds of volunteers with a budget of more than $8.5 million.
At our centers, we provide free high-quality workshops, one-on-one mentoring, after-school programs, and summer camps in safe and inclusive spaces. Our “At Home” program provides virtual workshops, while “Mighty Writers On the Road” brings our programs to schools, social service agencies, and community centers. We also run the Mighty Writers Food and Literacy Distribution program, which provides food, books, diapers, and other essential resources to the communities we serve — free of charge.
By emphasizing the importance of critical thinking, Mighty Writers prepares kids for all kinds of challenges they’ll face in the future, whether academic, interpersonal, or professional. Clarity of thought can be especially difficult for many of our students who live in violent and chaotic neighborhoods, or who struggle in school, are bullied, or are burdened at home with adult-sized responsibilities and concerns. Many of our Mighty youth frequently cope with trauma in their daily lives, causing physical, mental, and emotional harm that significantly impacts their ability to learn.
Through mindfulness training, our young writers learn to understand and effectuate concepts like gratitude, confidence, self-regulation, respect, and compassion. Becoming clear thinkers and communicators sets them up for success, and learning these skills in community fosters connection, trust, and empathy. In addition, Mighty Writers makes sure that students’ families have the resources they need — whether food, diapers, vaccines, or winter coats.
