Afaf studied her PhD in chemistry at Southampton University to become a Professor at Suez University. She was a Senior Research Fellow at Oxford University working with Professor Tom Brown and is currently an assistant professor at Southampton University working in therapeutic oligonucleotides and modified tRNA/mRNA and their delivery. Some of the reagents she developed are commercially available from Glen Research and the work was highlighted on National DNA Day and in research outreach.

She has around 200 publications including high impact factor (Science, Nature Chemistry/Comm./st. biology, etc..), patents and book chapters with H-index 52 and more than 8800 citations.
