James set up and heads Stewarts’ Trust and Probate Litigation Department which since 2016 has risen to Band 1 in both the Legal 500 and Chambers & Partners. He specialises in handling complex, high-value and often high profile global litigation relating to private wealth matters. Jurisdictions in which James has experience include the UK, the Bahamas, Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, Jersey, Guernsey, Gibraltar, Singapore, Hong Kong and the US.

He also has considerable expertise handling other contentious issues, especially cases involving fraud and asset tracing (particularly where trusts are involved) as well as advising on trust issues affected by divorce.

James’s team won STEP’s Contentious Trusts and Estates Team of the Year (large firm) at the STEP Awards 2025. The team previously also won STEP’s Contentious Trusts and Estates Team of the Year (midsize firm) at their 18th annual Private Client Awards 2023. The team won the UK Contentious Trusts & Estates Team of the Year award in 2021, 2020 and 2024 at Chambers High Net Worth Awards.
