A shift towards private assets: The why and the how
It is evident that a shift in focus towards private assets has begun, but what has caused this shift?
Mathieu Forcioli, Global and Asia-Pacific Head of Alternatives, Global Private Banking and Wealth, HSBC, joined us at the IMpower Studios in Monaco to tackle the topic of private market programs. During this interview he explores why this is an area that has recently been receiving a lot of attention in the asset management industry, the reason for the shift towards private asset classes and what opportunities are presented in the private markets space.

During this interview Andrew examines how robust portfolio are created in the current environment, what the opportunities and limits are in private markets and the demand for more sustainable and impact investing.

Mathieu Forcioli
Mathieu is currently Global Head and Asia Pacific Head of Alternatives, in our Global Private Banking and Wealth Division, based in Hong Kong. In this capacity, he oversees the offering of hedge funds, private equity funds, Real Estate funds and other private investment opportunities to HSBC’s private banking and wealth customers.
Prior to joining HSBC, Mathieu set-up the private markets offering of Antarctica Asset Management, a global platform allowing wealth managers to offer their clients access to a curated offering of hedge funds and private market funds.
Before that, Mathieu set up and grew the Asia operations of Moonfare, an online platform allowing private individuals to invest in Private equity funds.
Andrew Summers
Andrew is responsible for thinking strategically about the role alternative investments play in our investment advice to clients. This involves building on our existing knowledge and experience of alternative investments to develop additional investment offerings. He also sit on the Investment Committee and am part of the Investment & Research Office's leadership team.
Apart from a degree in Econonomics from Oxford University and being a Chartered Financial Analyst, Andrew has 27 years of experience in financial services, including working in Frankfurt, Germany, for two years. He has worked in wealth management for over 15 years during which has at various times had responsibilities relating to asset allocation, investment strategy and portfolio management, in addition to my leadership role within the investment and research functions.
Andrew has worked at Investec for over 15 years in various roles, but principally in building and developing teams and investment services, especially in the third party fund space. He has had various specific responsibilities, including overseeing the real estate investments we make on behalf of our clients. Prior to working at Investec he worked for Goldman Sachs for nine years.
