Dr. Ben Van Rompuy is Associate Professor of Competition Law at the Europa Institute at Leiden University, where he is also the Academic Director of the LL.M. Programme in European Law.
His main research interests lie in the fields of EU and comparative competition law (antitrust, State aid) and EU internal market law.
Ben has particular expertise in the application of EU competition law in the sports sector. He has published extensively in this area and has acted as an advisor and expert witness for various sports clubs and associations, athletes, and competition authorities. Notably, he represented the complainants in the European Commission's landmark antitrust case on the International Skating Union's eligibility rules.
Before joining Leiden Law School in 2016, Ben was a senior researcher at the T.M.C. Asser Instituut in The Hague and a Visiting Professor of competition policy and media regulation at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. He began his postdoctoral career at the Georgetown University Law Center’s Institute for International Economic Law. During this time, he also worked as an advisor to the US Federal Trade Commission’s Office of International Affairs.
