Microalgae are among the most promising feedstocks for plant biostimulation, yet the sector still tends to treat "microalgae extract" as a single, undifferentiated input, which limits reproducibility and makes field results hard to predict. In our study we demonstrated that performance is decided by two connected design layers: what happens upstream, which shapes the bioactive fingerprint of the biomass, and what happens downstream, which determines how it is stabilised and delivered to the crop. Rather than a fixed "extract", the bioactive profile can be intentionally oriented toward different agronomic objectives, from mitigating abiotic stress to supporting reproductive development. We link a multi-target mode of action ,to field evidence in horticultural crops and woody fruit species under hot, water-limited conditions, where treated plants showed statistically significant gains in flowering, fruit set and yield.

Agriculture has never lacked innovation. Today, farmers have access to biological solutions, advanced crop protection technologies, precision agriculture tools, and digital advisory platforms. Yet the adoption of these innovations at farm level remains one of the biggest challenges facing our industry. In my experience, the gap is rarely technical; it is often about trust, relevance, risk perception, and the ability to convert scientific advances into practical farming decisions. Having spent more than 32 years in the agricultural inputs industry, beginning as an agronomist and later leading organizations serving Egyptian agriculture, I have witnessed firsthand that farmers do not adopt innovations because of technical presentations or marketing messages. They adopt when they clearly see value under their own farming conditions and when that value is communicated by people they trust. This presentation will share practical lessons learned from introducing new technologies to farmers across different crops and production systems in Egypt. It will highlight why many promising innovations fail to achieve widespread adoption despite strong scientific evidence, and how the industry can overcome this challenge through more effective education and engagement strategies. The discussion will focus on four critical success factors: simplifying complex technologies into actionable practices, demonstrating performance under local conditions, building confidence through peer influence and trusted advisors, and clearly linking innovation to economic outcomes that matter to farmers. Real-world examples will illustrate how demonstration plots, field days, technical coaching, and long-term partnerships can significantly accelerate adoption rates. Particular attention will be given to biological agricultural solutions, where grower education is often as important as the product itself. Success depends not only on innovation but also on helping farmers understand where, when, and how to use new technologies to deliver consistent results. The session will conclude with a practical framework for companies, extension specialists, distributors, and policymakers seeking to improve adoption at scale. The objective is to move beyond simply introducing innovations and toward creating sustainable behavioral change that delivers measurable benefits for farmers, agribusinesses, and the agricultural sector as a whole. Ultimately, innovation creates value only when it is adopted. Bridging the gap between invention and implementation requires a deeper understanding of farmer realities, stronger educational approaches, and a commitment to building trust at every step of the journey. |
