Zvi Kelman is the Director of the Biomolecular Labeling Laboratory (BL2) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). He earned a B.Sc. in Agriculture from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and a M.Sc. in Cell Biology from the Weizmann Institute of Science. After receiving a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from Cornell University Medical College, he was a Helen Hay Whitney Foundation Post-Doctoral Fellow in the laboratories of Thomas Kelly (Johns Hopkins University) and Jerard Hurwitz (Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center). He joined the faculty of the Center for Advanced Research in Biotechnology (CARB) which was a part the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute (UMBI) as a Life Technologies Professor. He then become a Professor in the Department of Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics at the University of Maryland, College Park. In 2011 he was recruited by NIST to establish the BL2 and serve as its director.
