What are the 7 business process steps?

In the BPMI context, a business process typically follows seven logical steps, from purpose to improvement:

  1. Identify the process
Define what the process is, why it exists, and who it serves.

  2. Identify customers and requirements
Understand internal and external process customers, and their needs (often using tools like KANO).

  3. Define process boundaries
Clarify where the process starts and ends (commonly using SIPOC).

  4. Map the process (“As-Is”)
Visually document how work is currently performed using process maps or flowcharts.

  5. Analyse the process
Identify waste, variation, bottlenecks, risks, and inefficiencies.

  6. Redesign the process (“To-Be”)
Improve the process using Lean, PDCA, Six Sigma, or best-practice design principles.

  7. Implement, measure, and improve
Apply changes, track performance with KPIs, and continuously refine the process.

The BPMI course walks participants through this full lifecycle, not just process mapping in isolation.
