Profile

Alisa Shum is an Associate Professor at the School of Biomedical Sciences of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. She received her BSc degree in Cell Biology from the University of Glasgow and her DPhil degree in Developmental Biology from the University of Oxford. Following her doctorate, she was awarded a prestigious Croucher Fellowship to conduct postdoctoral research on genomic imprinting at the University of Cambridge. Alisa has over 20 years of dedicated research in obesity and diabetes.

Driven by a commitment to translational research, Alisa co-founded ABRAM Therapeutics in 2023. Her core vision is to bridge the gap between fundamental scientific discovery and tangible patient benefitliterally moving her inventions "from bench to bedside". She is acutely focused on addressing significant unmet medical needs, ensuring that the therapies and technologies developed in her academic lab translate into practical solutions that improve patient outcomes.

Her leadership in this translational space is evidenced by her team's success in winning multiple awards at pitching competitions and invention expos. These achievements highlight not only the scientific merit of her work but also its commercial viability and potential to attract investment necessary for development. Through her dual roles, Alisa serves as a critical link, fostering collaboration and accelerating the path from scientific breakthrough to patient care.
