Matthias is SVP, Head of Global Business Development & Alliance Management at Merck KGaA, Darmstadt Germany.

He and his team develop, implement, and execute on an end-to-end inorganic corporate growth strategy across all Merck Healthcare franchises in the therapeutic areas oncology, neurology, immunology, fertility, cardiology, metabolism, and endocrinology.

Matthias is an entrepreneurial-minded, result-driven, and communication-strong pharma business development leader with more than twelve years of international management experience. He successfully developed corporate inorganic growth strategies, drove structural and cultural change to generate deal readiness in large scale matrix organizations, and led negotiation teams on many transactions throughout his career, including transformative deals with deal values of greater than $4 billion.

He has lived and worked in Germany, the USA, England, and Gabon. Matthias holds a Ph.D. in Immunology from the Humboldt University Berlin and a MBA from Kellogg-School of Management, Northwestern University.
