Mark NestlehuttPresident & Executive Director at The Seamen's Church Institute
The Reverend Mark Nestlehutt is President & Executive Director of The Seamen’s Church Institute of New York & New Jersey (SCI). Founded in 1834—and with locations in New York City; Port Newark, New Jersey; Houston, Texas; and Paducah, Kentucky—SCI is the largest mariner service agency in North America and focuses on pastoral care, maritime education, and mariner advocacy. SCI’s chaplains and chaplain associates are CISM (critical incident stress management) and ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) trained and serve mariners in the Port of NY & NJ and throughout the inland waterways system. Through our Center for Mariner Advocacy (formerly the Center for Seafarer Rights) SCI has partnered regularly with the Yale School of Occupational Medicine on mariner health and wellness studies.
An ordained priest in the Episcopal Church, Mark served churches and schools in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Australia, Illinois, Massachusetts, and South Africa before joining SCI. He currently serves on the boards of ICMA (International Christian Maritime Association) and the National Waterways Foundation. For 13 years Mark served as Rector of a Chesapeake Bay parish whose membership included Chesapeake Bay pilots, Delaware River pilots, tugboat captains, ship’s engineers, and faculty from the Calhoun MEBA school. Prior to ordination, he worked in banking and finance and served as a naval intelligence officer. Mark is also an avid one-design sailor on Stars, Shields, and IODs.
