Capt. Belal Ahmed is the current Chairman of International Maritime Employees Council (IMEC). He is also the Managing Director of Western Shipping Pte Ltd Based in Singapore.
More than four decades in the Maritime Industry, Capt Belal started his career as a Deck Cadet in 1978 and continued sailing till the year 2000. His experience at sea from Jr Officer to Master shaped his thoughts and work ethics. His dedication to the industry continued when he joined the Shore Based Ship Management company. He was instrumental in transforming the company he works for now.
His involvement with IMEC started in 2004 and soon after he was inducted into the board of IMEC. In 2019, he was elected Chairman of the organization. He has contributed to various initiatives of IMEC that has greatly benefited the Maritime Industry, Seafarers and the social partners. During Covid-19 crisis, IMEC participated as a key partner to crew seafarers quarantine facilities and travel protocol. In recent times Capt Belal, initiated the Global tripartite partnership discussion between IMEC, ICS and ITF that will look into future of seafarer’s welfare, training, retention and making seafaring a relevant for young generation. Working closely with various government departments responsible for seafarers welfare, training, recruitment Capt Belal was able to influence policy discussions that will be beneficial to the Industry.
Capt Belal’s lifelong dedication and work for wellbeing of the seafarers were recently recognized by Missions to Seafarers with the ‘Secretary General’s award’. He continues to work for the Seafarers wellbeing and hope to continue to contribute to our industry.
