Eric Visser brings over two decades of maritime experience to his role as Vice President of Maritime HR Strategy and Operations at Holland America Line (HAL) and Seabourn (SBN). A graduate of the Maritime Academy in Amsterdam, Eric holds dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Marine Engineering and Nautical Science. He furthered his education through the Executive Development Program at the University of Washington’s Foster School of Business and continues to expand his expertise in MLC, ISM, marine audit, and survey disciplines.
Eric spent nearly 12 years at sea, sailing globally on oil tankers, general cargo, and passenger vessels, ultimately serving as Staff Chief Engineer. His shipboard experience shaped a deep understanding of crew dynamics and operational excellence. Ashore, he held leadership roles including Director of Vessel Engineering at Washington State Ferries before transitioning into strategic HR leadership.
At HAL and SBN, Eric oversees global maritime recruitment, collective bargaining agreements, labor contracts, statutory training, and talent management. He leads the development of competency frameworks across all onboard functions, aligning statutory requirements with skill-based training. His work spans strategic workforce planning, future ship design considerations, and the integration of new technologies to support seafarer performance and engagement aligning with company objectives and goals.
Eric is currently spearheading initiatives to establish training programs in Asia, collaborating with providers to build curricula that prepare crews for evolving technical demands. His vision centers on creating a connected, well-supported workforce with balanced labor conditions and clear career pathways, which drives individual performance as well as organizational.
Holland America Line and Seabourn are premium cruise brands under Carnival Corporation. HAL is known for destination-focused voyages aboard mid-sized ships, while SBN offers ultra-luxury experiences with expedition-style itineraries.
