Profile
Since 2018, Justyna BARTNICKA has been working for the European Commission in the Maritime Safety Unit, where she is responsible for seafarers' education, training, and certification, as well as their living and working conditions at sea. Currently, her focus is on two major projects: the review and revision of the IMO STCW (International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers) and the amendments to the MLC, 2006 (Maritime Labour Convention).
During the COVID-19 pandemic and the early stages of the war in Ukraine, she played an active role in the European Commission's efforts to facilitate crew changes, collaborating closely with the shipping industry and UN agencies. Her work involved engaging with stakeholders and creating policies for seafaring professions, often representing these initiatives at international public events.
Before joining the European Commission, she spent seven years at the Polish Permanent Representation to the EU, starting as a shipping attaché and later becoming the Head of the Transport Policy Division. She holds a degree in Political Science from the University of Szczecin
