Rebecca Hayes Mejia is the Public Health Manager at Marine Benefits, a specialized insurance company dedicated to supporting the health and wellbeing of seafarers and their families. Marine Benefits provides comprehensive health insurance coverage for seafarers while off duty, as well as year-round protection for their families—ensuring continuity of care and peace of mind across borders and time zones.
With over 30 years of experience in health and wellness, Rebecca manages Marine Benefits’ loss prevention initiatives, Re:fresh, a health risk assessment tool designed to monitor and promote crew wellbeing through a systematic and holistic approach, and Re:start, a tailored health and wellbeing program developed specifically for the shipping industry.
Rebecca holds a Master of Science in Public Health from Malmö University and is currently pursuing a PhD at the Faculty of Medicine, Lund University, within the Department of Social Medicine and Global Health. Her research focuses on the health and wellbeing of seafarers, with particular emphasis on:
· Occupational health risks in maritime settings,
· Mental health and psychosocial stressors associated with life at sea,
· Health promotion strategies tailored to multicultural and mobile seafaring populations,
· And the evaluation of preventive interventions aimed at improving long-term health outcomes for maritime workers.
Her work bridges academic research and industry practice, contributing to evidence-based solutions that enhance the quality of life for seafarers worldwide.
