Profile

Allan Larsen started his career in 1987 as a Marine Engineer Cadet and studied at South Shields Marine & Technical College situated in the North-East of England.

Following his cadetship Allan then worked as a Second Engineer Officer on North Sea stand by vessels before moving his career ashore to focus on the repair of ships machinery including diesel engines, generators, pumps, motors, purifiers and compressors to meet the requirements of classification societies.

In 1996 Allan then joined Ferguson Shipbuilders on the River Clyde in Scotland as Assistant Mechanical Design Engineer/Commissioning Engineer for various ship types including passenger ferries, research vessels, dredger and North Sea anchor handling and supply vessels (AHTS) before being promoted to Mechanical Design Engineer and Chief Engineer (trials), a role which he remained until joining Bureau Veritas in 2001.

During the next 15 years with Bureau Veritas, Allan qualified as a Ships in Service Surveyor for all ship types, all marks and all notations and held positions in Glasgow, Newcastle and Humberside before moving to their head office in Paris in 2007 as Head of Section for Damage Repair (ships in service, global) and also as Head of Section for Offshore Units in Service (global), where Allan was tasked with reducing casualties in the classed fleet of over 10,000 vessels whilst also managing Life Extension Studies and Condition Assessment Projects of offshore floating units.

Within his joint role Allan also qualified as an auditor for various technical & service matters and as a “trained trainer” which led to him training both Bureau Veritas colleagues and clients on a global basis.

Today, and since 2013, Allan is an active Ship Surveyor, Auditor, Inspector and “trained trainer” through his company Larsens Marine Surveyors & Consultants Ltd.

Allan is also a Chartered Engineer, Chartered Marine Engineer, Fellow of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects, Fellow of the Institute of Marine Engineering Science and Technology, plus, Fellow of the Society of Consulting Marine Engineers & Ship Surveyors and is well placed to design & deliver bespoke courses to the maritime industry.
