Profile

Dr Christodoulou-Varotsi is a legal and academic expert with an international educational and professional background specialised in international maritime and EU law and policies. Focus on shipping regulations, including industry best practice, from the standpoint of maritime safety, marine environment protection and maritime labour standards. Qualified lawyer since 1995 (Athens Bar Association, Greece). Highly experienced law drafter. Course Director and industry trainer with Lloyd's Maritime Academy for many years. Currently involved with consulting work, legal education and training.

She has been included in the Woman of Influence List 2019 of Maritime Economies magazine (Liberty Press).

Iliana’s areas of expertise include:

  • international, EU and domestic maritime law and policies
  • safety of maritime transportation and protection of the marine environment (EU Directives and IMO instruments)
  • maritime employment including international maritime labour standards and ILO MLC 2006
    registration of vessels
  • marine insurance and carriage of goods by sea law

In her capacity as a consultant, she has provided expertise in the frame of various EU projects and has drafted numerous ratification statutes for the harmonisation of a major maritime country with EU law as well as for the ratification of ILO MLC 2006. She has spent seven years as a Professor at the School of Business of DEREE - The American College of Greece, after having taught as an Adjunct Professor at the Panteion University of Athens. Iliana is a visiting lecturer at ALBA Graduate Business School, ACG.

She is a graduate (Maîtrise) of the Faculty of Law of the University of Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne (France) and a holder of a postgraduate degree (D.E.A.) in European and international law from the same University. She is also a Doctor of Laws with the highest distinction (University of Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne). Her thesis addressed the adaptation of Greek and Cypriot maritime law to EC law (post-doctoral research experience, Scandinavian Institute of Maritime Law). She has published many books, including Maritime Safety Law and Policies of the EU and the US: Antagonism or Synergy? (Springer/Germany) and Marine Pollution Control: Legal & Managerial Frameworks (Informa Law from Routledge).
