Profile

Simon has worked in the field of ports, shipping and freight transport for over 30 years holding senior management positions at seaports and freight companies in the UK. He has worked with many central and local government agencies and is familiar with the UK’s licencing requirements for new port projects, bringing significant economic value to local economies.

In 1997, he was given the opportunity to lead a project to develop the Hull Steel Terminal, still the UK’s only fully enclosed cargo-handling berth. He broadened his operational knowledge in South Wales where he held the positions of Deputy Port Manager at both Cardiff & Barry, and the Port of Newport.

He returned to the Humber in 2004 to take up the role of Deputy Port Manager at the UK’s largest port, Grimsby & Immingham where he was responsible for the day-to-day activity of the port.

He was appointed as Project Director for Green Port Hull in 2014, the Humber’s first dedicated offshore wind installation berth serving the Siemens blade factory in Hull. After successful completion of the project, he held a Group role in special projects evaluating Best Practice in cargo handling.

In 2019, he joined the Port of Tyne as one of its Commercial Directors with specific responsibility for Port Services including bulk handling and offshore wind. He left the Port in 2022 after leading the Port’s award of the contract for the Dogger Bank O&M base by Equinor.

Since 2022, Simon has held the position of Director of Commercial Operations at an independent school in East Yorkshire, but still retains a strong interest in the port’s sector.
