Rodger Macdonal
CEO at Azimuth Marine Ltd
Trainer

Profile

Rodger MacDonald went to sea with the British India Steam Navigation Co Ltd and after obtaining his Master’s Certificate and Compass Adjuster's Licence was appointed Surveyor of Ships for the New Zealand Government. He took leave of absence to gain command experience with Straits Steamship out of Singapore, but this led to another shore appointment as General Manager of the newly formed oilfield support company Borneo Straits Offshore, This was the start of a twenty five year career as a Senior Manager in a company which was more recently known as O.I.L. Ltd.

In 1996 Rodger was appointed as Director of Faculty at North West Kent College to manage the merger of the National Sea Training Centre. Having achieved this and seen the Faculty gain a Grade One from the College Inspection in December 2000 he retired from full time employment at the college. However Rodger remains deeply concerned with the training of Seafarers and strongly believes that Shipmasters today must be provided with Officers and Crews who are properly trained professionals and must themselves continually develop their own knowledge and expertise to meet present day challenges. In 2005 Rodger received the Lloyd’s Ship Manager ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ for his work in maritime education.

From 2001 to 2012 Rodger was appointed Secretary General of the International Federation of Shipmasters, (IFSMA) which had Consultative status at IMO and was admitted to the lLO's Special List of Non-Governmental International Organizations. As secretary General Rodger represented Shipmasters at IMO in all the main Committees and the sub-committees. Rodger remains a trustee of Nautilus International.
