Gemma Hancock commenced her maritime career in 2002 as a marine engineer cadet and subsequently served at sea as a marine engineer officer for 12 years.
Gemma’s extensive seagoing career then led her ashore and into her first shoreside position, spanning seven years as Technical Superintendent. As Technical Superintendent, she gained further experience in ship management, operations, safety and compliance to relevant class and statutory requirements.
In 2021, Gemma joined Larsens Marine Surveyors and Consultants Ltd as Marine Surveyor and Technical Support and she remains with this established survey, audit, consulting and training company today.
During Gemma’s time at Larsens Marine she has gained a wide range of experience performing many surveys, from private pre-purchase/ insurance surveys to flag state inspections, class surveys, and ISM audits. She has also completed a Diploma in Marine Surveying with the Lloyds Maritime Academy with Distinction.
Gemma promotes Continued Professional Development as being absolutely crucial to any maritime related role and a lot of her own free time is spent reading technical papers, reports and updates issued by flag and accident investigating states as well as class and statutory rules and regulations. She also states that she particularly enjoys listening to industry podcasts whilst travelling to and from surveys.
Registered with the Engineering Council, IMarEST and the Society of Consulting Marine Engineers and Ship Surveyors (SCMS) and being an approved flag state and class surveyor, Gemma brings first-hand experience, and knowledge from an experienced and professional position and, importantly, has the added benefit of having studied an LMA Diploma herself.
