Paul is Associate Director of the University of Plymouth’s Marine Institute and a lecturer in ship and port operations.
Paul has been involved in the shipping industry since 1962 when at the age of 13 he attended a merchant navy training school, HMS Conway. In 1966 he joined Alfred Holt and Company, the Blue Funnel Line as an indentured apprentice.
He served on a wide variety of company ships, including passenger and general cargo ships, RO RO ferries and the first cellular container ships employed on the Europe to Far East service. He received a BSc (Hons) degree in maritime studies from the University of Wales in 1972 and attained a Master Mariner’s Certificate of Competency in 1976.
