Rodger started a career at sea in 1959, which culminated in command in 1970. His seagoing time was followed by over 26 years as a senior manager in a number of senior shore positions which were related to ship and port operations prior to joining full time education in 1996 as Director of Faculty at the National Sea Training Centre, part of North West Kent College.
