Steve Berg is a seasoned venture capitalist with a successful track record of investing in deep technology companies within the artificial intelligence (AI), data analytics and cyber security sectors. His unique skill is in understanding the potential impacts of new technologies and how they change business dynamics. Although his formal education is in finance, holding an MBA and Financial Analyst Charter (CFA), he has studied the underlying technologies he invests in including learning to code (poorly) in Python and the underlying algorithms and tools used to implement machine learning and deep learning. As a way of incrementing his knowledge on AI, he has cultivated a large network of AI experts from academics and authors to enterprise fellows to startup founders. He meets with these folks regularly and surveys them occasionally as a way of keeping on the cutting edge of AI technology impacts. In addition, Steve has a keen interest in the bridge between government and technology, specifically for cyber security and AI as these technologies have significant impact on jobs, the economy and national security. Steve spends a great deal of time thinking about the legal, moral and ethical issues surrounding AI and the impact of making good decisions as well as taking the right precautions now, in the early days, rather than having to fix bad decisions in the future. This thought guides his decisions on capital allocation.
