Profile
Ronan Scanlan has over 15 years' experience in EU, Irish and UK antitrust and competition law, policy and practice, with a focus on merger control, abuse of dominance, antitrust investigations and litigation. He trained and qualified at Macfarlanes in London (2007 – 2012) and spent time on secondment to an Indian law firm and as competition counsel at Tesco Group plc (2013). He previously served as Deputy Director in the Competition and Markets Authority in London (2014 – 2018) during which time he worked closely with the European Commission on both merger and conduct investigations, with the Irish CCPC and in China (working with MOFCOM).
Prior to joining Steptoe, Ronan worked at Arthur Cox and Matheson in Ireland (2019 – 2023), during which time he advised on Phase 2 mergers (including for Bank of Ireland in the banking sector) and numerous antitrust investigations (including dawn raids by ComReg of Eircom, by the CCPC of Phonewatch and by the CCPC and Italian Competition Authority of Ryanair). He also acted for Eircom, Sky Ireland and Three Ireland on appeals in the Irish High Court appeals in relation to regulatory decisions.
He holds a master's degree from King's College London in EU Competition Law and, since 2020, has been named as a 'Rising Star' in Legal 500. He is recommended by and recognized as a 'next-generation leader' in Who's Who Legal. He maintains a bi-weekly newsletter on LinkedIn, titled “the CMA’s Critical Friend”, which covers key developments in UK competition law.
