WHO SHOULD ATTEND

This course is intended for professionals working within the event industry that are responsible for the safety and security of their staff and attendees. Authorities want to see competent Event Managers running an event for the simple reason that an event always gathers many people in a venue to experience a presentation, show or concert which contain elements that need to be controlled.

Staging an event is inherently riskier than operating a restaurant, for instance, because these show elements always carry a degree of risk. And there is the additional risk in gathering people together to form a larger audience. Exposing the audience to these risks must be done in a controlled way so as not to let anyone come to harm.

This course is focused on event professionals involved in planning, assessing, setting up and operating an event, namely:

Event Managers

Health & Safety Advisors/Managers

Event Management students and lecturers

In-house company Event Planners

Audience/Crowd Management personnel

Authorities involved in Event Safety

Operations Managers

Production Managers

Venue Managers

HR staff

Security personnel

COURSE METHODOLOGY

Every event begins with the planning phase. Getting it wrong during this phase leads to insurmountable problems down the road. This is where the documentation plays an important role. Producing the necessary documentation gives Event Managers the chance to think through the event and keeps everyone on the same page. This becomes more and more important the larger events get. When staging events, local authorities need to be supplied with proper documents to inform them and gain their approval for the event operations. We’ll use different examples of small and major events to lead attendees through the entire planning and approval process.

Using self-developed checklists during tabletop exercises, attendees will learn how to make sure all processes are working, all safety related infrastructure is in place, and all manpower (such as security, medical, and fire safety personnel) are in place and prepared to go into the operational phase of the event. During a crisis situation, many things happen all at once. Keeping a clear head, giving clear instructions and making the right decisions is extremely difficult if you haven’t trained for these situations. Attendees will therefore experience what happens in an event control room when a crisis situation occurs and how the crisis is dealt with in a calm and competent way.

Additionally, when a crisis situation happens, communicating to a larger team in a clear and concise way is paramount to leading that team during the crisis. Real world examples are used to train these communication methods.
