Probing the Future: Design Provocations and the Culture of Innovation
Clive van Heerden, Senior Director, Design Led Innovation, PHILIPS DESIGN
Business culture does not nurture creative communities. In Philips, they're trying to design 10-20 years in the future what lifestyles will be. They test the future, testing contextual design. They identify weak signals: something that warrants research that has a weak signal that could turn into something in the future.

Observations from the Edge: How Organizations Are Using Crowd Dynamics to Illustrate Their Futures
James Gardner, General Manager, SPIGIT
Gardener has realized that it's not central innovation programs within organizations that are successful, but the edges of the organizations create the innovation.

  • -Breakthroughs don't pay or scale

Strategic European Policies on Design and Innovation: 2020-2030 Framework
Ziga Turk, Secretary General, THE REFLECTION GROUP FOR THE FUTURE OF EUROPE

The Grand Transformation ABC: What's going on in the world

  • -Automation and abundance
  • -BRICs and globalization
  • -Climate Change and Energy
  • -Demography
  • -E-everything (e business, e teaching, education)

Most important driver for future: Abundance. The traditional model is being disrupted ' the thing/person who is producing is not necessarily spending anything. This leads to abundance or products and information. Selling products isn't just selling items anymore ' it's about selling coffee. If people can provide more meaningful experiences by buying fair trade coffee, they will. Buy the house cleaners or buy environmentally friendly cleaning products?

We know how to reduce C02 levels. How do we do it without wrecking the economy? There are core structural issues behind our economic crisis. Europe has already invested in improving roads, education, etc. This is exactly what the BRIC countries are doing right now.

What can Europe do? They created the Reflection Group on the Future of Europe. They are high level minds that could create a way to communicate that to the leadership of the countries.

Three challenges for human talent:

  • -quantity
  • -quality
  • -empowerment

Exploring and Expanding the Business Innovation Portfolio of the Future
David McGrath, Head of Global Innovation Scouting, NOKIA

Nokia realizes that the best people in the world don't work with Nokia. They have realized they need to build strategic growth areas. In the Corporate Business Development team, they look at the new businesses and services the company needs to work with.

If you are going to successfully innovate within a large corporation, it's all about the knowledge management. Take learning's and re-apply them. Innovation can happen anywhere in the organization, they focus on defining whether innovation happens within the core of the business or the 'beyond core'.

One of the biggest challenges for innovation is to find a leader for the innovation because it oftentimes results in failure.
