Karl Wachter is a Partner and the General Counsel of Magnetar Capital, a $14 billion multi-strategy hedge fund manager with headquarters in Evanston, Illinois.

Prior to joining Magnetar in 2010, Karl served as General Counsel of hedge fund managers Amaranth Advisors and Diamond Lake Investment Group. Karl began his legal career in 1997 as an associate in the New York office of Clearly Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP.

Karl actively participates in industry trade associations, having served on the board of the Alternative Investment Management Association (AIMA) since 2014, and as its chairman since 2020.

Karl earned a J.D. with honors from the University of Chicago Law School, an M.A. from the Elliott School of International Affairs at the George Washington University and a B.F.A. with honors from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University.
